How to Choose Your Wedding Colors

Having a hard time narrowing down your wedding colors? With so many to choose from and so many ideas on Pinterest, it can feel nearly impossible to decide! Color can really set the mood and make your day personal. Here are some things to consider to help choose the perfect palette for your day:

Personality

Are you and your partner bold and bubbly? You may want to include some pops of bright colors. Modern and sophisticated? Maybe stick with black and white. Laidback and down to earth? Consider using earth tones or neutrals.

Tip: We all have colors we’re drawn to. If you’re not sure what colors represent you best, look around your house and in your closet - what color are your clothes, your decor, your walls? - or ask a friend what colors they associate with you. The most important thing about your wedding is that it is a reflection of you and your love, so start with what you like, not what’s trendy or in season!

Venue

The next thing I’d consider is your venue. Is it a blank canvas waiting to be brought to life with color? Or does it already showcase some colors you’ll want to incorporate into your design? What is the vibe of the space - retro, modern, rustic, industrial? Using colors that make sense in the setting they’ll be in is the start to creating a cohesive overall design.

Season

Lastly, take seasonality into account. I put this one last because it’s easy to get stuck in a rut with seasonal colors. PSA: Your spring wedding doesn’t have to be pastel colors and your fall wedding doesn’t have to be red, orange and yellow. But season can play a role in which flowers are available and the overall look and feel of the day. So my recommendation is to keep the season in mind but not let it limit you. There are unique, creative palettes for every season.

And if you really can’t decide, consult your florist! Flowers can be one of the best mediums to showcase your wedding’s color palette. Florists have a good grasp of color theory, experience working with a wide variety of palettes, and knowledge of what flowers are in season when. Personally, color is my favorite element of design and one of the main reasons I am so drawn to flowers. I love talking color and helping couples choose the palette that fits them best.
